What exactly is the ‘cleaning solution’ in those pen brushes for DSLR/P&S cameras?


I bought a cleaning ‘pen’ for my dslr are, and saw that there was a spray solution too as part of the pen.

I was wondering – is that solution just water? Or something else? (if so, what)?

I’m a little weary about spraying the liquid on the cloth, and then onto my lens (as directed).

It’s isopropyl alcohol.
It works better than water for removing finger oil and grease, won’t rust anything and evaporates quickly.
As long as you’ve removed any grit (that might scratch the surface coating of the lens) before starting with the cloth, it’s quite safe to do.

Though I hate to get in an argument with another Answerer, isopropyl alcohol IS the main ingredient in commercial lens cleaner, the kind that can be bought at any high street optician or photo store (it’s actually a 70/30 alcohol/water mix).
Canon recommends lens cleaning fluid bought from a high street opticians in this masterclass video on lens cleaning….

A quick scan of the internet shows that the only real worry about using isopropyl alcohol is its possible effects on the polycarbonate used in making lens barrels, but what little gets on the plastic will evaporate too quickly to do harm.
