Are mini dv camcorders best for apple macs?

If so. Which is the best quality HD camcorder for a mac?

If your Mac is a MacBook made between October 2008 and June 2009 – or is a MacBook Air, then there is no firewire port and no way to add one. In this case, a flash memory camcorder like the Canon FS series (for standard definition flash memory) or Canon HF series (for high definition AVCHD/MTS files onto flash memory) is likely best.

If your Mac is ANY OTHER Mac made in the last 5 years or so, a miniDV tape based camcorder that connects to the Mac with a firewire cable is likely best. The selection inclusdes (but is not limited to) the Canon ZR series, Canon HV series and pretty much ANY professional grade camcorder.

The video captured to miniDV tape is in DV and HDV format. This is the least compressed video available for consumer camcorders. More compression = more discarded video data = reduced video quality. Not only are miniDV tape based camcorders best for Macs, but also best for Windows or any other computer operating system.

Flash memory is second choice – the file types are the same as hard disc drive camcorders, but HDD camcorders have other known issues that miniDV tape and flash memory camcorder do not have.

DVD camcorders should never make anyone’s short list. Ever. Not even to be used as a doorstop.
